Belgian director Stefan Liberski draws freely on a novel by Jean-Philippe Delhomme for a delightful existential comedy that tracks happiness in the little things of everyday life.
A life of dreams
A nerdy, unhappy painter, Jean-Yves Machond (Benoît Poelvoorde) decides one day to change his life. He sets off to find inspiration in a small Normandy town, where he hopes to create his next masterpiece. But his encounter with a group of local artists is to take him significantly off course. Through their contact, he becomes more open to pleasure and begins to cherish a deeper dream: that of finally becoming a happy man…
The art of fugue
Belgian humorist, writer, screenwriter and filmmaker Stefan Liberski’s genially engaging universe brings together Benoît Poelvoorde, François Damiens and Camille Cottin, as well as the inimitable Gustave Kervern and Laurence Bibot, in this restorative comedy that captures a man in crisis at a crucial turning point in his life.
Rich in moments of conviviality nourished by simple pleasures, the film takes the form of a joyful fugue striking the perfect balance between dazzling humor and tender emotion. We laugh and are moved by the generous spectacle of this fragile man gradually finding his place in the world.
A real treat of a film, both funny and sensitive, this poetic comedy delighted the audience at the Sauvenière cinema preview!
