There have never been so many movies, TV shows, and other content to discover. Yet the space devoted to reviews seems to be shrinking. Culture sections are disappearing, newsrooms are consolidating, algorithms are increasingly influencing what’s visible, and content creators now play a major role in recommendations.

In this context, what role does criticism still play?

There have never been so many movies, TV shows, and other content to discover. Yet the space devoted to reviews seems to be shrinking. Culture sections are disappearing, newsrooms are consolidating, algorithms are increasingly influencing what’s visible, and content creators now play a major role in recommendations.

Is it still a counterforce? A tool to guide the viewer?
Or has it become just another piece of content in a constant stream of opinions?

Speakers

  • Karin Tshidimba: A journalist and critic for the daily newspaper and website “La Libre,” Karin Tshidimba divides her screen time between movies and TV series—two complementary mediums where many actors and actresses, as well as an increasing number of filmmakers, showcase the breadth and diversity of their talent…
  • Jean-François Pluijgers: After studying journalism at the ULB, Jean-François Pluijgers began his career at *La Libre Belgique*, where he worked as a film critic for seven years. He then became head of public affairs at the Cinematek, before returning to film criticism with the launch of Focus Vif, where he headed the film section until 2023. He currently continues his work on the website A Day at the Movies and has also served as president of the Union de la Critique de Cinéma.

Moderation

  • Constant Carbonnelle, a film critic since 2018, worked for seven years at the newspaper L’Avenir. He currently contributes to the daily newspaper L’Echo and the magazine Surimpressions, and serves on the board of directors of the Union de la Presse Cinématographique Belge (UPCB). He is also a member of the FIFCL selection committee.

The conference is free for accredited attendees (registration via FIFCL).
